  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Madrid decided to sign the French forward this summer, despite his medical report showing signs of physical decline since 2018, as per . The report suggested that Mbappe's physical performances had been worsening season after season and that he would decline further again in 2024/25 but Madrid still opted to confirm his expensive signature. Those at the club believed that the goals and assists he would provide, as well as the lack of a transfer fee and profits made through marketing would outweigh his physical decline.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Mbappe's difficult start to life in Spain has now raised doubts over whether Los Blancos should have sanctioned his signing. The reports of physical decline, coupled with the forward's lack of success in front of goal, make for worrying reading for Madrid. While most footballers experience a physical decline as they age, Mbappe's speed has always been a vital asset and Madrid may be concerned that, should he lose yet more pace, it could start to negatively impact his goal and assist output. Carlo Ancelotti has eased concerns over Mbappe's form.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

In March this year, during a game against his current side for Paris Saint-Germain, Mbappe clocked a 100-metre speed of 10.9 seconds. This is just over a second slower than Usain Bolt's world-record pace of 9.58 seconds. While he may be wearing slightly physically, the French captain is still lightning fast.

    WHAT NEXT FOR MBAPPE?

Mbappe has a chance to redeem his poor showing and missed penalty against Liverpool in midweek on Sunday when Madrid host Getafe. He will be desperate to end a dry period in front of goal and get his career at Madrid back on track.
